Video is the hardest kind of content to build a product around: a raw upload is gigabytes, it has to be transcoded, delivered fast to any device, and shared with the right people. vidiCrew makes that effortless for video teams, and Toobler engineered it end to end — a serverless media pipeline, searchable galleries, and native apps.
Customer and context
vidiCrew is a collaborative video-production and media-management platform. It gives video teams one place to upload, organize, transcode, stream, share and deliver their video and media — turning a folder of heavy raw files into a fast, shareable, well-managed library. Toobler is the engineering partner that built it: the web platform, the native mobile apps, and the serverless media pipeline behind them.
The challenge
Video is unforgiving to engineer a product around:
- Media is heavy and slow. Raw video is huge; it has to be ingested, transcoded and delivered fast to any device and connection, or the experience falls apart.
- Teams need to organize and find it. Uploads pile up; without galleries, search and management, a media library becomes unusable.
- It has to reach people — and sometimes sell. Content has to be shareable by link, deliverable to clients, and, where it applies, purchasable through a clean workflow.
- Every screen, and it has to scale. Web and native mobile, on a backend that absorbs unpredictable upload and streaming load without a fixed server bill.
The solution
A serverless media pipeline. Toobler built the core on AWS: uploads land in S3, MediaConvert transcodes them, HLS makes playback fast and adaptive across devices and connections, and CloudFront delivers it worldwide. The work runs on Lambda, API Gateway and DynamoDB — serverless, so it scales with load instead of a fixed server.
Galleries, library and search. Media is organized into galleries with uploads, management and shareable URLs; Elasticsearch makes the growing library searchable; thumbnails and a media library complete it.
Web and native mobile. A web platform plus native iOS and Android apps, so teams and their audiences work on any screen.
Delivery and workflow. Shareable gallery links, a film → pre-checkout → checkout workflow for delivering and selling content, roles and permissions, multi-site, admin, social login and analytics.
Built securely, for scale. Secrets moved out of code into AWS configuration, staged environments across Lambda, Elasticsearch and API Gateway, and a CDN-accelerated front end.
Engineering worth naming
- A real video pipeline, serverless. Upload → MediaConvert → HLS → CloudFront on Lambda/API Gateway/DynamoDB — the hard part of any video product, built to scale without fixed servers.
- Media you can find. Elasticsearch over a growing library so teams can actually locate content.
- Cross-platform from one backend. Web and native iOS and Android on a single media backend.
- Delivery and commerce. Shareable galleries and a checkout workflow — content that reaches people and can be sold.
Results
- Heavy video becomes fast, shareable media — ingested, transcoded, streamed adaptively and delivered over a CDN.
- A managed, searchable library — galleries, management and search across web and mobile.
- A platform that scales with load — a serverless AWS backend rather than a fixed server.
- Delivery and sale built in — shareable links and a clean checkout workflow.
What this means for video technology
A video product is won or lost in the pipeline: moving heavy media, transcoding it, and delivering it fast to any device is the engineering everything else sits on. vidiCrew is that done right — a serverless AWS media pipeline (MediaConvert, HLS, CloudFront), a searchable media library, and web and native apps on top.
