Engineering Workforce and Field Operations for a Construction Group

A construction workforce and field-operations platform — attendance, leave, appraisals and a site-ready mobile app

The Nael workforce mobile app on a phone — attendance dashboard (working days, present, absent), employee attendance, requests and profile, and service requests including sick and official leave.

A construction workforce doesn’t sit at a desk. It’s spread across sites, its hours are logged in the field, and the tools meant to manage it — attendance, leave, appraisals — usually live in separate systems that never reach the site. Toobler engineered a workforce and field-operations layer for Nael, and a native mobile app that puts it in the hands of the people actually on site — on the same platform as the group’s projects and costs.

Customer and context

The client is Nael, a construction and contracting group. Its people work across projects and sites, while the systems tracking their time, leave and performance sat apart from the platform running the projects themselves. Toobler engineered the workforce and field-operations layer, and its mobile app, as part of the same web and mobile platform, delivered over several phases.

The challenge

Managing a construction workforce is a field problem as much as an HR one:

  • Attendance happens on site, not at a terminal. Time and attendance captured on paper or in a back-office system arrives late and detached from the project it belongs to.
  • Leave, appraisals and requests live in disconnected tools. Employee records, leave, performance appraisals and service requests scattered across systems make the workforce hard to see as a whole.
  • The office tools never reach the site. A crew planning a day’s work needs its agenda, its notifications and even the weather where the work is — on a phone, not a desktop HR portal they will never open.

The solution

Toobler engineered a workforce layer and a native field app on the same platform as Nael’s projects and costs.

Workforce and HR. Employee records, leave, attendance, multi-phase performance appraisal, user profiles and service requests — engineered as connected modules rather than separate tools, so the workforce is visible in one place.

A native app for the people on site

Most construction software assumes a desk. Nael’s workforce doesn’t have one, so Toobler engineered a native iOS and Android app as the field-facing side of the platform — the way the system reaches the people who never open the web application.

  • Mobile time and attendance. Attendance and time are captured in the field, on the phone, and flow straight back to the core platform — so the record is made where the work happens and is tied to the project it belongs to, not re-keyed later in an office.
  • Each person’s agenda, to hand. A worker opens the app to what their day looks like, rather than chasing it down through someone else.
  • Weather alerts and forecast. The conditions where the work is, surfaced for site planning — the difference between a productive shift and a wasted mobilization on an exposed site.
  • Notifications. The platform reaches out to the field when something needs attention, instead of waiting for the field to check in.

Because the app is a view onto the same platform as the workforce, project and cost data — not a separate tool bolted on — what a person does on site and what the office sees stay in step.

Engineering challenges worth naming

  • Attendance from the field — capturing time and attendance reliably on a mobile app used on site, and tying each record back to the right project in the core platform.
  • A connected workforce model — employee, leave, appraisal and service-request modules on one micro-service platform, sharing a single data model with real-time updates rather than living as separate systems.
  • A native app that carries real workflows — iOS and Android delivered across multiple phases, giving field users attendance, agenda, weather and notifications on the platform they’d otherwise only reach from a desk.

Results

Moving HR off paper and onto the platform cut HR processing time by around 80% — employee records, leave and appraisals digitized and accessible in real time rather than pulled from a filing cabinet. What was delivered: a production workforce and field-operations layer — attendance, leave, appraisal and service requests — and a native iOS and Android app that brings time capture, agenda, weather and notifications to the site. It was engineered as part of Nael’s wider construction platform and evolved over multiple phases.

What this means for construction platforms today

Construction workforce tools usually stop at the office door, leaving the people doing the work with paper timesheets and a separate HR portal they rarely open. Toobler engineers the workforce and field layer — and the native app that carries it to the site — into the same platform that runs projects and costs, as a custom build, not a product to adopt.
